When it comes to Fall outfit ideas, we’re seriously spoilt for choice. Whilst we’re sad to say goodbye to our breezy summer looks, Fall is one of the most exciting seasons in the fashion calendar opening up a plethora of wardrobe combinations.
The drop in temperature means mastering your Fall outfit ideas is all down to some clever layering. It’s the season your capsule wardrobe can truly shine and we get to bring out transitional jackets, cozy knitwear and our favorite jeans. You'll want to start by swapping over summer fabrics for heavier materials such as suede, corduroy, denim and leather as a basis to the new season. And it's time to say goodbye to summer dresses and hello to classic trench coats, luxe cashmere knits and chic ankle boots.
While of course your Fall outfit ideas should incorporate some of the Fall 2022 fashion trends, for the best Fall outfits, that will see you through year after year, rely on wardrobe staples and investment pieces that can be mixed and matched to see you through to winter.
“In the summer it’s easy to just throw on a cotton dress and be ready but Fall allows us to be a lot more creative with our looks. You can’t go wrong with a jeans and knit combo but if you want to elevate it, simply add a statement boot or polished trench and wait for the compliments to roll in,” says Eloisa Johnson, Deputy Fashion Editor at woman&home.

Fall outfit ideas - stylish outfits chosen by a fashion editor
1. Midi dress + Boots
This is a great look if you’re not quite ready to part with your best summer dresses. Many of the best midi dresses - regardless of their intended season will work just as well with the best winter boots as they do with your sandals, giving the feminine silhouette a tougher edge, whilst rendering them wet-weather ready too.
Opt for a long-sleeved dress or layer a fine roll-neck knit under a strappy or sleeveless number for extra coverage on the arms. Tap into one of the top shoe trends 2022 and try teaming with some chunky Chelsea boots.
RRP: $119 / £79.99 | If you’re bored of florals and checks, this cool graphic print will make a refreshing change. Cut to a casual t-shirt style, this dress has that throw-on and go appeal that’s perfect for stylish off-duty days. Add a belt to highlight your waist.
RRP: $389 / £195 | The best Chelsea boots are a classic but they’ve had a modern upgrade for Fall winter shoe trends 2022 with larger-than-life soles for a chunkier aesthetic. These are crafted from waterproof materials so they're really practical too.
RRP: $69 / £45 | For an extra layer when the temperatures drop, wear a fine-knit top under your lightweight dresses. The merino wool is super soft and of premium quality and we love the pop of pink too, ideal for exploring what is Barbiecore.
2. Leather pants + Knit
Surprisingly easy to wear, learning how to style leather pants will open up a world of fashion possibilities. Swap denim jeans for real or faux leather trousers, but instead of wet look or leather leggings, look for jean, jogger or wide leg silhouettes for a modern feel. Team with a cropped knit, or try half-tucking your top to help stream your silhouette. A look that will seamlessly take you from day to night, finish with the best designer heels to keep it on the glam side.
As with the best designer bags, leather improves with age and wears well, so leather pants should be seen as a capsule wardrobe investment piece.
RRP: $129 / £85 | All hail the stripy knit, a hero during any outfit crisis. This has a slouchy, oversized fit for a relaxed feel and a classic crewneck silhouette that is universally flattering. There are ribbed cuffs and hem for added detail and structure.
3. Trench coat
Is there anything more timeless than a trench coat? The epitome of in-between weather dressing, a chic trench coat is a must when it comes to fall outfit ideas, as it can be thrown over everything from jeans to dresses, giving an instantly pulled-together look.
When it comes to the best trench coats, it's really not about what's underneath, so make sure to select a well cut and good quality trench coat, as this is a wardrobe staple that you can wear for fall and spring, year in, year out. Whether you opt for a luxurious Burberry trench coat, or a budget-friendly version, stick to camel hues for a trench coat that works with all outfits and seasons.
RRP: $2,293 / £1,650 | If your budget can stretch to a Burberry trench, this British designer brand is totally worth the splurge. Cut to a classic double-breasted style with storm flaps and a belt, it’s an enduring design will never fall out of favor.
RRP: $410 / £229 | Chic and cozy, a jumper dress deserves a spot in your fall wardrobe. Easy to dress up and down, this iteration is crafted from a soft Merino wool blend in a versatile oatmeal hue. The high neck is ideal for added protection.
RRP: $130 / £133 | Ballet flats have made a fashion comeback and we’re totally on board with this comfy style. These are made from buttery soft Italian leather that molds to your feet for a great AM to PM wear. The cognac hue is gorgeous too.
4. Jeans + Blazer
A classic look you’ll reach for time and time again, the blazer and jeans combo is the chicest of the bunch. The epitome of smart casual outfit ideas, the best blazers will smarten up your denim for a polished weekend look.
When it comes to how to style a blazer for a Fall outfit idea, minimal styling is needed with this look. We’d recommend layering a simple white tee underneath a well-tailored jacket, team with some straight-legged jeans - or take the opportunity to learn how to style baggy jeans, and finish the look with stylish loafers for a polished spin. If you want to make more of a statement - try a vibrant-hued or a bold check print blazer.
RRP: $49.99 / £34.99 | Classic yet contemporary, we love the statement plaid on this blazer. It has a regular, relaxed fit through the body and a single button fastening. Let it take center stage and team with the best t-shirt and your fave jeans.
RRP: $138 / £154 | A pair of straight-leg jeans are always worth investing in and these have a flattering high rise to help contour your shape. With a vintage finish for a cool lived-in look. They're made from organic cotton, and have sustainable credentials.
RRP: $810 / £645 | Embrace the menswear-inspired look and learn how to style loafers for women. Opt for loafers that will go-with anything, such as this gorgeously crafted, minimalist Gucci pair with a gold-tone horsebit detail and slim silhouette.
5. Sweater + Skirt
Your Fall outfit ideas are the perfect place to experiment with this high-low formula. The key to nailing a sweater with skirts is to go for polar opposites - a chunky or oversized sweater should be teamed with a slinky slip skirt or pleated iteration for a cozy meets elegant getup. In reverse a neat fitted knit can take on one of this season's runway favorites - a full skirt silhouette, as the two will easily balance one another.
Depending on the temperature you can complete the outfit with some heeled boots or sleek pumps. If you’re feeling swamped by the fabric, tuck the front of your knit into your skirt to add definition to your waist, whilst retaining the relaxed feel of the ensemble.
RRP: $79.99 / £49.99 | Make your party skirts work harder and team this stunning skirt with chunky knits and basic tees for a more casual look. The flowy fabric allows for ease of movement, while the vibrant pink and white print will steal all the attention.
RRP: $290 / £178 | A cream cable knit sweater is a classic and this design from British clothing brand Reiss ticks all our fall outfit boxes. Made from a snuggly wool blend, it has a cozy turtleneck and a longline design that can be tucked or worn loose.
6. Leather Jacket + Dress
A fast-track way to a fall-ready wardrobe is to introduce wintery textures to your look and that’s where the leather jacket reigns supreme. A stylish choice, the best leather jackets will layer over everything from casual day looks, shirt to flirty evening frocks, giving everything in its path a rebellious edge.
A big trend for this coming season, leather made a welcomed return to the runway in numerous guises, from bikers to blazers and oversized shackets. A timeless piece, your leather jacket should only improve with age, and this is one staple well worth investing in, as the more buttery the leather, the more you'll still be loving it for years to come.
RRP: $268 / £270 | If you're wondering how to style a slip dress, this silky style taps into that '90s minimalism trend and is an elegant choice for date night or as one of the best cocktail dresses. Wear over a fine knit, such as a roll-neck for added warmth.
RRP: $479 / £299 | A leather jacket has the power to transform any look and fall weather is the perfect time to dust yours off. In a signature biker silhouette, this iteration has striking gold hardware and classic biker zip detailing for added interest.
RRP: $93 / £105 | Pretty and practical, who doesn’t love the best crossbody bags when you’re running errands. This contemporary design is finished with an oversized buckle detail, giving it a runway-ready finish. The white hue will work all year.
7. Sleeveless Knit + Tailoring
Another clever layering tool, the knitted vest made a comeback last fall and the best gilets and sweater vests are sticking around for the long haul. A versatile piece, particularly in fall and spring season's, it's an ideal layering piece when it comes to your fall outfit ideas.
While you can wear a sleeveless knit over a dress or a finer knit, this style works particularly well over more tailored pieces, such as the best shirt dresses or over shirting paired with fitted trousers, giving your smarter looks a cozy feel.
RRP: $285 / £175 | Indulge in luxury cashmere knits for an extra plush finish to your fall outfits this season. This punchy coral design features a detachable snood so you can wear it as a turtleneck or round-neck, giving excellent cost-per-wear.
